Rockchip RK3688, Benchmarking Qualcomm Snapdragon 888?

2024-11-06

Recently, Rockchip revealed news about their new generation flagship processor RK3688 at the third GMIF2024 Innovation Summit,

The picture shows that

  • the latest RK3688 will use the ARMv9.3 instruction set.

How new is this instruction set? The latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8Gen3 MediaTek9400 is only ARMv9.2-A. Using the Cortex-A7xx full-core design, the overall CPU computing power can reach 250K DMIPS. RK3588 is 93K DMIPS, and the performance has almost tripled. The current flagship chip generally uses the Cortex-A720 as the mid-core core, and they all use the ARMv9.2-A instruction set, which means that RK3688 will use a newer ARM core. It is possible to carry the yet-to-be-released Cortex-A730 or Cortex-A735 (of course, it may also use the Cortex-A720/A725 or the new ARMv9.2)

  • The computing power of GPU will reach 1TFlops.

What is the concept of 1TFlops of GPU computing power? NVIDIA GeForce GTX750 has a single-precision floating point performance of 1TFlops.

  • NPU performance will reach 16TOPS
  • RK3688 SOC supports UFS4.0

Another major upgrade of RK3688 is support for UFS4.0. SOC supports UFS4.0, which means that disk performance will definitely surge. Currently, flagship mobile phones are also using UFS4.0.

From the parameters shown promoted by Rockchip, we can find that RK3688 directly points to the latest chip technology in all aspects.

It is expected that RK3688 can basically reach the level of Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 at worst, and may even far exceed expectations, after all, it uses ARM's latest core. Although it only uses a mid-core, using the latest core can also be said to be a great improvement. This progress not only benefits the development board, but also all kinds of set-top boxes and various e-book chips.

RK3588 is already very smooth to use, so it is worth looking forward to how smooth RK3688 will be. And some media predict that RK3688 will be launched next year. So let's look forward to this super SOC. By then, Thinkcore will also develop our core board and development board as soon as possible and support various customizations.
